Advanced Process Control and Optimization

This is the second of two workshops that are designed to provide training opportunities to advanced operators.   The optimization workshops will be located at water treatment plants and are taught using a hands-on approach. Operators will work with colleagues in teams and learn-by-doing the techniques being presented. This workshop reviews technical and theoretical principles behind the major unit processes, discussion of operational techniques and the specific tools available for optimizing each process.

Workshop 2 is divided into the following sessions: (Download agenda)

Pretreatment
Mixing, Coagulation, and Clarification
This session reviews the governing principles of the chemical addition and clarification processes at conventional water plants. The critical nature of this first step in treatment will be highlighted and expanded upon. Proper jar testing techniques will be reviewed in the classroom and demonstrated by the instructors.  Operators will  practice jar testing techniques for a variety of water quality issues.

Filter Media
Filtration
This session reviews the key parameters essential to optimized particle removal through media filtration. Operators will be instructed in best-practices for filter inspection and maintenance. Operators will construct filter inspection tools and perform filter evaluations on a full-scale filter.

Chlorine Tester Jars
Disinfection
This session provides a comprehensive review of inactivation of pathogens by chemical disinfection. Operators will be trained to use the EPA CT Spreadsheet. Operators will practice CT calculations and interpret tracer study data.

Drying Beds
Residuals Management
This session emphasizes the critical nature of proper residuals management and its potential impacts on system optimization. Operators will learn techniques to properly manage residuals as well as best-practices for de-watering and disposal. Operators will inspect a full-scale de-watering facility.
